English for Literacy NCEA Level 1
Background:The 11ENL course is for students who found Year 10 English challenging and who would benefit from being in a smaller class. It also provides students with more time to complete each internal Achievement Standard and gives students a better chance of achieving University Entrance Literacy in Year 12. Students who are unsure of the best NCEA Level 1 English course for them should consult their English teacher or the Head of English. The course is designed so that students can continue in Year 12 with either the standard Year 11 English NCEA Level 1 or English for Literacy NCEA Level 2 or English NCEA Level 2. The standards have been chosen to lead to these pathways. Credits offered are sufficient and appropriate to gain Level 1 Literacy. Students are expected to sit the end-of-year external examination with a focus on fewer achievement standards to allow more time for progression.
Course Description:This course develops the skills introduced in the junior English programme, including response to studied and independently read texts, formal and creative writing, close viewing of film, and speech. Students will be assessed in a range of internally and externally assessed Achievement Standards.
