Science

  • Biology
    • Biology is the study of life. It involves people investigating things as diverse as the social antics of Pukekos, the evolution of humans, the migration of whales, the growth form of plants and the anatomy of organs and cells. Coupled with technology, it provides fascinating avenues for research into the treatment of human diseases, growth of robust crops and the development of vaccines and therapies. A good understanding of our environment and the ways in which humans interact with it, is essential for informed decision-making about the future of our planet. Biology is used in such areas as biotechnology, food science, brewing, dairy and pharmaceutical industries, conservation, plant protection, ecology, aquaculture and fisheries, education, environmental resource management and planning.

  • Chemistry
    • Have you ever wondered what things are made of? Chemistry is the route to that answer. You will study the basic particles that make up all matter and the things around us. Chemistry is the study of change and the creation of new, useful materials. Chemists look to find patterns of behaviour and to discover the innermost nature of materials. Chemistry is important in careers for food processing, paper manufacturing, winemaking, paints, plastics, ceramics and pharmaceuticals. Chemists may work in research and development, chemical analysis, quality control, environmental monitoring, marketing and management.

  • Physics
    • Students will develop scientific abilities and skills relevant to the study of Physics; these will be of use in everyday life and if desired, will form a basis for more advanced study. Students will gain an awareness of the study and practice of science, including practical work and will understand that scientific applications have both beneficial and detrimental effects on the individual and the environment. Physics provides the scientific basis for our understanding of many aspects of science, modern technology and engineering including structural, mechanical, electrical, optical, robotics, telecommunications, medical and information technology. The course will prepare students to become confident citizens in a technological world and to take an informed interest in scientific matters.
