Painting and Mixed Media



This subject is equivalent to a subject on the ‘approved list’ for University Entrance.

Recommended Background:

Students must have achieved Grade C or higher in Art & Design (Painting & Related Media) AS to proceed to this course of study or HOF approval. Good academic essay writing skills are essential for this course as assessment requires students to present a written component as part of their assessment.

Course Description:

Art & Design (Painting & Related Media) A2 Level is a practical and researched based course upon which further study in painting at tertiary levels is based. The aim of the programme is to allow students to pursue a painting/ mixed media study where research, development and realisation are achieved in depth. Students will have the opportunity to select the materials, techniques and processes in which they work most successfully. They will experiment with a wide range of processes including oils, watercolour, printmaking, photography and acrylic painting processes. Students will produce a written analysis which relates to their personal area of study to form an integrated submission. Topics Covered: Research based on a selected art theme, idea concept or process that is personal to the learner. Investigation of painting and drawing media. This may extend beyond paint into mixed media and include photography, 3 D forms and printmaking. Investigation of techniques and processes Drawing and painting conventions related to selected topic of study Purposefully extending ideas within the selected topic towards finished paintings Final coursework completed paintings Accompanying written analysis of 1500 words which supports the practical investigation.
