Recommended Background:

This is the first year of a two year AS Mathematics programme. Topics covered are the same as the one year course except the pace is slower. Accelerated students who complete 10MTC, IGCSE Mathematics (Extended) in Year 10 and achieve less than 85% who wish to study AS Mathematics must choose this course.

Course Description:

The course includes work from the Pure Mathematics and Probability and Statistics topics described in the AS Mathematics 1 Year course (12MTC). There is a strong emphasis on the mastery of algebra and graphs to form a solid foundation for other topics. Students will sit the external examinations at the end of the second year, in 2019. Students who start this course in Year 11 and successfully complete it in Year 12, could proceed to A Level Mathematics in Year 13. Students will sit INTERNAL school examinations only in the first year of the course. They may have the opportunity to sit external Mathematics NCEA Level 2 Achievement Standards at the end of the first year. At the end of the second year, they will sit:

Paper 13 P1 Pure Mathematics External Compulsory Weighting: 60%
Paper 63 S1 Probability and Statistics External Compulsory Weighting: 40%

Students will sit INTERNAL school examinations only in the first year of the course. They may have the opportunity to sit external Mathematics NCEA Level 2 Achievement Standards at the end of the first year. Students should achieve a mark of at least 65% in the school examinations at the end of the first year for acceptance into the course to complete their AS qualification the following year.
