Recommended Background:

9479 - Art & Design (Photography) AS and 9481 - Digital Media & Design AS require skills and knowledge from studying Year 11 Art. Students who have fewer than 12 credits at Merit in Art NCEA Level 1 should consult with the Faculty Head about their likelihood of successful progress.

Course Description:

Costs: Students will need access to a single lens reflex digital camera. The department has a supply of Digital SLR cameras which may be hired. A $100.00 contribution will be required to cover maintenance and repairs. There is also a range of lenses and accessories available for student use. There will be further expenses for photographic papers and printing costs throughout the year. Art & Design (Photography) AS is a practical course upon which further study in photography in Year 13 and tertiary levels is based. Photography is an art form that is a mode of expression and communication. It is concerned with visual perception and aesthetic experience and forms a language in addition to those used by literary, mathematical, scientific and factually based subjects. The photography work will be informed by research into established forms of Photography and Art. Students will learn the technical aspects of photographic and darkroom procedures and then combine these with the use of digital photography, to extend their visual ideas into individual practical performance. Student selecting 9481 (Digital Media & Design) will have the option of using moving image (film) to present their final outcomes.

Students who successfully complete Art & Design (Photography) AS – 9479 in 2019 will be able to proceed, in 2020, to Art & Design (Photography) A Level – 9479. Students who successfully complete Digital Media & Design AS – 9481 in 2019 will be able to proceed, in 2020, to Digital Media & Design A Level – 9481. Students will need to achieved Grade D or better in Art (Photography) AS and have sound academic essay writing skills.
